NEW DELHI: Active cases of Covid-19 rose in India on Wednesday after recording a decline for two days in a row, even as September turned out to be the worst period for the country during the pandemic, which represents the highest number of deaths in any month.
With 1,173 recent deaths on Wednesday, the number of Covid-19 victims in India rose to 98,628. Up to 33,255 of these deaths, or 33.7% of the total casualties – were registered in September. This surpassed the worst previous month, August, when 28,859 deaths were recorded. July caused 19,122 deaths and June and May 11,988 and 4,267 casualties, respectively.
With 86,768 new cases on Wednesday, India’s Covid-19 case burden surpassed the 63 lakh mark at 63.06,802. September represented more than 41% of the cases with 26,24,179 new infections. In contrast, 19.87,705 cases were recorded in August, the worst month before.
Active cases increased marginally Wednesday to 9,47,041 from 9,46,477 on Tuesday.
One day after breaking the 10,000 mark for the first time, Karnataka registered 8,856 new cases on Wednesday and became the third state in the country after Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to register more than six lakhs of cases.
The number of daily casualties increased for the second day in a row in Maharashtra with 481 recent deaths reported on Wednesday from 430 on Tuesday. On Monday, the state’s casualties dropped to 180. With 2,654 new cases, Mumbai recorded its highest daily peak. The previous high was 2411 on September 17. The city reported 46 new victims, more than 41 deaths reported in Delhi on Wednesday.
