After hitting an intraday high of 44,161, the benchmark index BSE Sensex it closed 315 points or 0.72 percent more at the record close of 43,953; while the broader NSE Nifty finished 94 points or 0.74 percent higher at a new peak of 12.874.
The top winners in the sensex package included Tata Steel, SBI, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank and L&T, with their shares rising as much as 6%.
While NTPC, ONGC, HCL Tech, Infosys, Hindustan Unilever, ITC and Power Grid were the main losers, falling as much as 2.69 percent.
On the NSE platform, the Nifty Metal, Bank, Financial Services and PSU Bank sub-indices gained as much as 2.49%.
Markets skyrocketed on news that American drugmaker Moderna Inc’s coronavirus vaccine was 94.5 percent effective in preventing infection.
Moderna Inc became the second drug maker after Pfizer Inc to announce promising test data on the development of a Covid-19 vaccine, driving global markets higher.
“It is reassuring that the temperature requirements for the (Moderna) vaccine are quite moderate, which would facilitate transport,” Anita Gandhi, director of Arihant Capital Markets, told Reuters news agency.
The markets had made modest gains in a special one-hour “muhurat” trading session for Diwali on Saturday, and closed on Monday because of Balipratipada.
