Sensex tanks 997 pts from the day high, 44K infractions;  Nifty ends at 12,859

After climbing new all-time highs in morning trading, the domestic stock market fell about 1.5 percent on Wednesday as investors posted gains across the board. The volatility index, India VIX, jumped 10 percent to 23.1.

Among the major indices, the S&P BSE Sensex closed 695 points, or 1.56 percent lower at 43,828 levels, while the NSE’s Nifty finished at 12,858, down 197 points or 1.51 percent. In the first trade, Sensex hit a high of 44,825.37 while Nifty scaled the peak of 13,146 levels.

Global markets

Global stocks rose to a record high on Wednesday after an overnight rally that sent the benchmark Dow Jones index breaking 30,000 for the first time as investors cheered for a dramatically improved global outlook.

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei rallied 0.5% to a 29-year high, while the MSCI Non-Japan Asia Pacific Equity Index gave up early gains to trade down 0.2% as Chinese stocks were constrained by concerns about rising debt defaults.

In commodities, oil rose for a fourth straight session on Wednesday as the market ignored an industry report showing US crude stocks rose more than expected, extending a hope-driven rally. of a Covid-19 vaccine boosting demand for fuel.
