As Chinese political activism reaches its peak in Nepal, India also remains in contact with the Nepalese authorities, but only to ensure that bilateral cooperation It is not affected. Official sources in New Delhi said that India did not want to do anything to suggest that it is a factor in Nepal’s domestic politics.
Perhaps in his most outspoken intervention in the internal affairs of Nepal, a senior official in the international wing of the chinese communist partyGuo Yezhou met with the President of Nepal, BD Bhandari, to discuss the political crisis arising from the division in power. Communist Party of Nepal (NCP).
Guo was sent to Kathmandu apparently with a message from President Xi Jinping after the Chinese ambassador Hou YanqiEfforts to maintain PM KP Sharma Oli and his rival PK Dahal Prachanda’s separation had little success. While India has been watching the situation closely, so far it has stayed on the sidelines of the political situation and instead focused on efforts to build on recent commitments to Nepal for economic cooperation.
Guo has been China’s key person for Nepal for the past few years and indeed was said to have played an important role in bringing Oli and Prachanda together. He is likely to meet with Dahal on Monday and convince him to keep the communist alliance intact.
Guo had previously traveled to Kathmandu in February 2018 when the Oli-led CPN-UML and the Prachanda-led NCP (Maoist Center) were to merge and form a unified communist party following their alliance’s victory in the 2017 general elections.
Guo will assess the situation within the ruling party and encourage both factions of the CPN to seek some sort of common ground for party unity, Nepal’s Kathmandu Post said, citing senior leaders. It will convey the message of the Chinese leadership, including that of President Xi Jinping, to the CPN leadership, said a leader of the ruling party.
China has carefully chosen and dispatched Guo at a time when unity within our party is undermined, said a member of the PNC Standing Committee.
Nepal plunged into a political crisis last Sunday after Oli recommended dissolving the 275-member House amid a power dispute with Prachanda.
Several political leaders had described the meetings of the Chinese envoy with the leaders of the ruling party as interference in the internal political affairs of Nepal. China’s political profile in Nepal has been on the rise in recent years with billions of dollars in investments under its billion dollar Belt and Road Initiative, including the Transhimalayan Multidimensional Connectivity Network. China’s ambassador to Nepal, Hou, is also seen as making open efforts to gain support for Oli.
