The second dose of the Covid vaccine will be administered today to those who took the first injection on Day 1 of the nationwide inoculation campaign on January 16. However, experts have clarified that the second dose can be taken anytime between four and six weeks after the first dose.

More than 77 lakhs of frontline and healthcare workers have received the first dose of the vaccine as of Friday, the government said, adding that 97 percent of beneficiaries are “satisfied.” India has set a goal of inoculating 30 million people against COVID-19 by July.

India took just 26 days to vaccinate more than 70 lakh people, while the United States took 27 days and the United Kingdom 48 days to reach the same figures, the Health Ministry had previously said.

With more than 8 lakh beneficiaries, Uttar Pradesh has registered the highest number of vaccinations, followed by Maharashtra (6,33,519) and Gujarat (6,61,508).

“Thirteen states and UT have vaccinated more than 65 percent of registered healthcare workers. Bihar leads with more than 79 percent of registered healthcare workers vaccinated,” he said.

Seven states and UT have reported fewer than 40 percent vaccinations of registered healthcare workers. Puducherry has recorded the lowest vaccination performance of 17.5 percent, he claimed.

The ministry said 17 states and UT have reported no deaths in the past 24 hours.

Currently, two vaccines are being administered, Covishield from the Serum Institute and Covaxin from Bharat Biotech. There is also the possibility that a third vaccine, Russian-made Sputnik, will be available in India in April.
