Mumbai Lockdown4: Only the registered people were allowed to board the train.

Mumbai:

Thousands of migrant workers bound for Bihar gathered outside Mumbai Bandra Terminal today, with the hopes of catching a special train for the state. But most of them were sent back by the police. Only registered people were allowed to board the train, their number is a fraction of the people that came. Dramatic visual effects from the outside of the station showed to the people, carrying their meagre possessions streaming in through the roads, to traffic jams.

In Mumbai CSMT, the main train station of the city, a kilometre-long queues were observed again as migrant workers and waited to board the train is leaving the station of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The lines have remained a constant since Friday.

According to the sources, Western Railway has transported more than 7 lakh people of Gujarat and Maharashtra. The Central Train station has carried around three lakh people from Mumbai itself in 175 trains.

In the last few weeks, Mumbai — the city of dreams that has been attracting people from all over the country for decades, has witnessed a reverse migration. Thousands of people have registered to return home by special trains being run by the Centre. Others have been taking the bus, illegal trucks, and even walking.

The chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said yesterday around 5 lakh migrant workers, have already left the state of trains and buses. In the absence of the migrants, even asked the locals to throw in the 50,000 industries that were given permission to re-open yesterday.

The prime Minister said that the state has to take “good care” of migrant workers. “We have provided three meals to around 6.5 lakh migrants, but many wanted to go home. And we have made provision for that. Already at least 5lakh migrants have been sent to their states for the buses and the trains,” he said.

Even so, more on its way out. Last week, a huge snaking queues were seen outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the city’s largest train station.

The workers who gathered at the Bandra terminus this morning I wanted to board a “Shramik” Special train for Bihar. The police said that only the people who had registered themselves –around 1000 — were allowed to board. The rest are told to go to their house.

The Bandra terminal has often seen such large meetings, mostly by people who live in the slums all the way.

Last month, long before the special trains for the workers began, the hordes of migrant workers gathered outside the station with the hope of returning to the house after hearing rumors about the trains. The video recordings of the area showed thousands of people pushing, shoving, giving a go to the government warnings about the coronavirus and social distancing.

Mumbai has had more than 20,000 cases of coronavirus, the highest in any city. The state government has refused to allow any relaxation in the restrictions to the view of the large numbers.
