When India entered the fifth phase of unlocking since the coronavirus outbreak, the central government has given several relaxations by virtue of which it has also allowed states to reopen schools as of October 15. However, some states are still concerned about the reopening of schools, as it may lead to an immediate acceleration in the number of coronavirus cases that cause a significant health risk.
The Center’s unlocking guideline established that all schools, universities located outside of the COVID-19 containment zone can be reopened as of October 15.
States like Haryana and Meghalaya have yet to make a decision on this. While Delhi, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh have decided not to open schools yet.
Here’s what the different states are deciding regarding the reopening of schools:
Uttar Pradesh: The government of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday (October 10, 2020) announced that schools can reopen for students in classes 9 to 12 from October 19.
Punjab: The Government of Punjab has published new guidelines for the opening of schools from October 15th. According to the new notice issued by the Punjab government, initially only classes 9 to 12 will be allowed and no more than 20 students will be allowed per section.
Delhi: The national capital has decided not to open schools before October 31. The Deputy Chief Minister and the Delhi Minister of Education have already made it clear that all schools will remain closed until October 31.

Chhattisgarh / Maharashtra / Gujarat: All three states have decided to keep schools closed. The state government has clarified that reopening schools can be considered only after Diwali.
Meghalaya: TThe Meghalay government has asked parents for their input before making a final decision on reopening the schools. According to Education Minister Lahmen Rimbui, the state government has decided that upper primary schools will reopen only to address the study questions of students in classes 6, 7 and 8.
Andhra Pradesh: The Andhra government says schools will not reopen in the state before November 2.
West Bengal: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also made it clear that the decision to reopen the school will only be made in November. He said schools will remain closed for the time being, the government will make a decision on it only in mid-November.
