The state has partially reopened schools for classes 9 through 12 with limited students since Sept. 21 amid strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols. The Education Minister said the government may consider gradually increasing the strength of these classes.

Schools for the upper classes were partially resumed with parental consent, the minister said. The state has around 1.50 lakhs of schools, including private ones.

On the other hand, the Goa government has not yet made a decision on the resumption of normal classes. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said that the final decision on reopening the schools will be made only after consulting all stakeholders, including teachers.

Teachers’ associations are opposed to restarting physical classes immediately, fearing that it will be impossible to maintain social distancing in schools.

Amid the increase in coronavirus cases, student safety is of the utmost importance, Sawant told PTI. He said he has asked the state secretary of education and the director of education to consult with stakeholders, including school administrations, parent-teacher associations, and teacher bodies such as the Goa Principals Association and the Goa Forum.
