On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected the petition requesting the implementation of the 50 percent Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation in Tamil Nadu medical colleges in the seats contributed to the All India Quota (AIQ) by part of the state.
A bench headed by Judge L Nageswara Rao rejected requests to implement the OBC’s 50 percent reserve in Tamil Nadu for AIQ seats in state medical colleges this academic year.
The government of Tamil Nadu, which governs All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) had approached the high court after the Center said it was not possible to extend 50 percent of the OBC reserve this year.
In July, the Madras High Court had directed the central government to form a committee made up of representatives from the Center, the State and the Medical Council of India to decide on the issue of providing OBC reserve on Tamil-delivered AIQ seats. Nadu for medical admission.
The High Court had also said that any decision of the committee would apply only to future academic years and not to the current one.
