SC rejects PIL for independent investigation into “mismanagement” of the Covid-19 pandemic | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a PIL presented by retired bureaucrats alleging serious mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country by the government.
Lawyer Prashant Bhushan told a bank headed by Judge LN Rao that on February 4, the Ministry of the Interior (MHA) had issued a warning, but that international passengers were not screened until March 4.
Bhushan said the “Namaste Trump” event was allowed to occur on February 24 and that a lakh of people had gathered in a stadium despite the MHA’s warning that overcrowding should be avoided.
He claimed that experts had advised against a total lockdown, adding that due to the lockdown, GDP fell by an unprecedented 23 percent, millions of jobs were lost and the economy was destroyed.
The bench said that this is a matter of public debate, not of the Court and are we not inclined to interfere?
He added that these are matters that the Government must study.
The petition alleged that the Center failed to take timely and effective measures to contain the transmission of the virus and an independent investigation by a commission, appointed under the Investigation Commissions Act of 1952, was essential to investigate the “lapses”.
