SC Collegium recommends Judge Sanjib Banerjee as Chief Justice of Madras HC


Judge Sanjib Banerjee is currently a judge of the Calcutta High Court.

The Supreme Court College recommended the appointment of the Calcutta High Court judge, Judge Sanjib Banerjee, as president of the Madras High Court. Currently, Judge AP Sahi serves as President of the Madras High Court. The Collegium’s recommendations were posted on the Supreme Court’s official website on Wednesday. Apart from the Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Justices NV Ramana, RF Nariman, UU Lalit and AM Khanwilkar are part of the Collegium of five judges.

The appointment of Judge Sanjib Banerjee as president of the Madras High Court comes before the retirement of the president of the Madras High Court, AP Sahi. The acting CJ of the Madras High Court, AP Sahi, took office last November and was scheduled to retire at the end of December 2020.

Judge Sanjib Banerjee completed his BSc with honors in Economics from the University of Calcutta in 1983 and his LLB from the same University in 1986-87. He was registered as a lawyer in November 1990. Sanjib Banerjee has practiced in the higher courts, including Bombay, Karnataka, Orissa, Patna, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. He was elevated to permanent judge on June 22, 2006.

Meanwhile, along with Justice Banerjee, the Supreme Court College also recommended the elevation of three other justices as chief justices of several other higher courts, according to a notice dated December 14. According to the recommendation, Uttarakhand High Court Judge Judge Sudhanshu Dhulia has been recommended as President of the Gauhati High Court and Allahabad High Court judge. Justice Pankaj Mithal has been recommended as Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court also recommended the appointment of Judge S Muralidhar of Punjab and Haryana as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. Delhi High Court Judge Hima Kohli has also been recommended as Chief Justice of Telangana High Court. Judge Hima Kohli completed her graduation from the University of Delhi School of Law and registered as a defense attorney in 1984.
