NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to approve an order prohibiting the sale of alcohol, but asked states to consider delivering liquor at home during a shutdown.
“We will not approve any requests, but states should consider home delivery or indirect liquor sales to maintain social distancing,” a bank comprised of Justices Ashok Bhushan, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and BR Gavai. They were listening to a petition seeking a ban on the direct sale of liquor.
Lawyer J Sai Deepak, who appeared for the petitioner, told the court that the crowd was circumventing social distancing rules in alcohol stores and requested the issuance of a clarification from the home ministry regarding the guidelines regarding the sale of spirits.
The Center has allowed independent alcohol stores to reopen under strict guidelines, but overcrowding in stores has made it difficult to maintain social distancing standards.
According to Reuters, food delivery company Zomato is in talks to expand its operations to liquor delivery as it seeks to capitalize on high demand for alcohol during the shutdown.
