Goalkeeping hitter Sanju Samson revealed on Tuesday how his Rajasthan Royals teammate and Australian hitting stalwart Steve Smith earned the nickname “Chachu.” Samson said the nickname started with former hitter Brad Hodge.

“It started with Brad Hodge, I used to call Smith ‘Chachu’, then when Hodgy left, I started calling Smith ‘Chachu’. In return, Smith started calling me ‘Chachu’ as well. We both really enjoyed and keep calling each other that way,” Samson said in a conversation with spin consultant RR and New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi on the RR podcast.

“I share a very good relationship with him. He is one of the best brains in world cricket and we all really enjoyed playing with him, ”said Samson of Captain RR.

Samson said he likes to watch the likes of Smith, wicketkeeper Jos Buttler and all-rounder Ben Stokes preparing for the games. “I look at Jos especially since he is also a wicket hitter. He is always working on his skills and his game and he is never idle. He’s working on his maintenance, hitting the nets or running around the park. I love to watch and know how he thinks and prepares as a goalkeeper before a game, ”said Samson.

Commenting on his favorite IPL hit, he said, “I think my favorite innings will be against RCB at Chinnaswamy when I hit 91 and we won the game.”
