The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip (which launched in mid-February) appears to be better than the company’s first foldable phone: Only 230,000 units were sold in the month of March, 56.1% more than the February figures. In comparison, Samsung sold 400,000 Galaxy Folds in all of 2019.
Still, that’s a minor victory since the big money maker, the Galaxy S20 series, isn’t quite as fashionable. A report from Korea states that sales are 35% lower than what the S10 achieved last year.
While COVID-19-related locks certainly had an effect, overall sales for Samsung smartphones are down 22.4%, a sharp drop, but not as big as the one suffered by the flagship line. In total, the company sold 89.46 million units in March, 4.3% less than in February.
Apple, which like Samsung depends on Western markets, experienced a 23.4% annual drop in March sales with a total of 10.14 million units sold. That’s almost a quarter below February sales.
Meanwhile, Huawei shows signs of recovery with a monthly increase of 26.6% as the company’s key market, China, is already recovering.
Samsung is not so lucky as its key markets remained closed in April, reportedly expecting an even bigger drop in sales.
