India has shown a downward trend in the number of active coronavirus cases reported every day. On Monday, the country reported 20,021 new Covid-19 cases and 279 deaths, according to the Union Ministry of Health. The number of active coronavirus cases remained below 3 lakh on Monday as well. While the number of new cases in the country is declining, the Union Ministry of the Interior extended surveillance, containment and precautionary guidelines against the virus on Monday until January 2021.
The extension of existing guidelines against coronavirus comes in the context of the new variant of the virus recently discovered in the UK. Many of those who have returned from the UK are reported to be positive for the coronavirus, raising alarms.

More than 80 million people have been infected by the coronavirus worldwide. The increase in the number of coronavirus cases in Georgia, USA, has depleted healthcare facilities with more than 4,000 hospitalizations.
