NEW DELHI: India shipped on Sunday INS Kesari, bringing on board two teams of medical assistance, medicines and essential foods, to countries in the southern Indian Ocean as part of the government initiative ‘Mission Sagar’.
Countries, including the Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles, requested assistance from India to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Health care teams will be deployed in Mauritius and Comoros, helping their governments deal with the COVID emergency and dengue fever (in the case of Comoros), the Foreign Ministry said.
The ship will deliver shipments of essential Covid-related medicines to Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles and around 600 tons of food to the Maldives. In addition, in the case of Mauritius, a special shipment of Ayurvedic medicines is also sent, the ministry said.

Shipments to Madagascar and Comoros also include hydroxychloroquine tablets, which have previously been shipped to Mauritius, the Maldives and the Seychelles.
In line with its proven role as the first responder in the region, India has already supported the efforts of the governments of the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Seychelles by providing shipments of essential COVID-19 related drugs. A team of select medical personnel was also dispatched to the Maldives to increase the Maldivian government’s preparedness to combat this crisis, the ministry said.

Earlier today, the Indian Navy INS Jalashwa arrived at the port of Kochi bringing back 698 Indian nationals, who were stranded in the Maldivian capital of Male, as part of Operation Samudra Setu.
