Dissident leader Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, has said that he and his supporters will approach the Election Commission to register his Shiromani Akali Dal (Democrat) outfit as a new political party.

“We have decided to register our team, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Democrat), as a new political party. After consulting with our colleagues and lawyers, we are now finalizing the legal documents and auxiliary statements and will soon submit an application to the EC for our party registration. SAD (D) will participate in the upcoming SGPC and Punjab assembly elections, ”Dhindsa said according to the Economic Times.

The new party, he said, will participate in the upcoming elections to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandahak Committee (SGPC) and the Punjab assembly.

In February, the SAD central committee expelled MP Rajya Sabha Dhindsa and his son Parminder Singh Dhindsa from the party and accused them of “anti-party activities” by criticizing the leaders in the party’s decisions and joining the rebel Taksali leaders. SAD chief Sukhbir had, in fact, referred to Dhindsa as a “traitor”.

Days before his expulsion, Dhindsa and his son, who is a Lehra legislator, had resigned from key positions claiming that the party was not being run democratically.

They had the floating SAD (A) as a platform and have been working together with other factions to strengthen their base of support. “Our party will provide a platform to all those who have been disillusioned with the degeneration of the SAD into an undemocratic party controlled by the Badal family. The SAD has lost its base among the people of Punjab and the community due to the autocratic way in which the leadership, especially Sukhbir Badal, has been operating, ”Dhindsa said in the ET report.
