“Saad altered audio clip”: After denying the report, police summon Express reporter

A day after he called a report on The Indian Express, ‘Tablighi FIR: Police investigation indicates Saad’s audio clip was tampered with“Objectively incorrect … purely conjectural”, the Delhi Police sent an email notice on Sunday night to the City Editor and the Chief Reporter, requiring the journalist to join the investigation on Monday or face legal action under Section 174 of the Indian Penal Code – can result in imprisonment and a fine.

The notice was sent on the day that The Indian Express published the Delhi Police reply with its own response that the report was based on conversations with sources and officials aware of the probe against Maulana Saad, and that calls and a message to CP Special (Crime) Praveer Ranjan on Friday for his comments before the publication received no response.

A notification under Section 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, invoking powers of a police officer to require the attendance of witnesses, by Inspector Satish Kumar, Investigation Officer, SOS-I, Crime Branch – sent to the City Editor and Chief Reporter – contained instructions for The Indian Express special correspondent Mahender Singh Manral to appear before him on Monday and present “all relevant documents / materials necessary for the purpose of the investigation” and to “disclose all the facts” relevant to research.

The notice instructed the reporter to “join the investigation of the case when necessary” and warned of legal action under Section 174 of the IPC in case of “Failing to attend / Comply with the terms of this Notice.”

The Indian Express reported that an initial investigation by the Delhi Police Crime Division found that an audio clip mentioned in the police FIR against Markaz Nizamuddin’s chief, Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, suggested that he had asked the members of Tablighi Jamaat that they did not follow the rules of social withdrawal and prohibitive orders. They can be “manipulated” and joined using various audio files.
