DUBAI: Former captain of India Sunil gavaskar is delighted to see a “fit again” Rohit sharma back in action, what he feels is the “best news for Indian cricket” ahead of the Australian tour.
Rohit, who sustained a left hamstring injury during an IPL game against Kings XI Punjab, I was back in the park against Hyderabad sunrises on Tuesday, a week after he was banned from the Australian-bound squad on fitness grounds.
“Regardless of what has happened before regarding his (Rohit) injury, I would say that it is great news for Indian cricket that Rohit Sharma is in shape,” Gavaskar told the YouTube channel Sports Tak.
Gavaskar, however, said the concerns raised by the head coach Ravi shastri and president of BCCI Sourav Ganguly while urging the senior player not to rush his comeback they are also “valid”.
“Look, the concern shown by everyone collectively that there might be a break (if he rushes back) is valid. But he looked confident. He dived into the boundary ropes and also into the 30-yard circle,” Gavaskar said. .
The legendary starter said that if BCCI wants to put Rohit through another fitness test, there is no harm.
“He played the game to show that he is fit, but if the BCCI wants to retest his fitness, then there is nothing wrong with that. Because they want to check whether he is fully fit or not.”
Gavaskar also echoed Ganguly’s sentiments that the game situation is completely different from online sessions that lack pressure.
“It may be, it will be monitored. Normally, when you come back from injury, you need to play some games, as physical condition determines your physical condition.
“Regardless of how fit you look on the networks, you are not stressed, but when you have the pressure of a match, that gives an idea of how fit you are,” he explained.
He, however, did not want to be asked questions about whether Rohit will regain his vice-captaincy should he come to the side.
“Captain, the vice-captain shouldn’t be a problem at all. The moot point is that the player should be available to play and he is available,” Gavaskar said.
“Rohit was asked twice before and after the game and he said he’s fit and doing well. He seemed confident.
“So actually, it doesn’t make sense to go into the details of what happened before. Let’s talk about today and today he’s in shape,” he added.
