New Delhi:
The ongoing farmer agitation, with its growing focus on the national capital, has made road travel between Delhi and its neighboring states hell. Protesters, paranoid security personnel, and choc-a-block traffic have made crossing the border a big chore for regular travelers.
For example, at the Tikri border of West Delhi with Haryana, farmers blocked the Delhi-Bahadurgarh highway for the third day in a row, refusing to move to designated land in the Burari area of North Delhi offered by the Delhi administration.
For those traveling between Delhi and Haryana on this route, this block has brought life to a standstill. One of these days, several families, including women and children, were seen walking and dragging their luggage to cross the border.
One of those women spoke to NDTV. “There are eight of us in the family, including four women and two children. We live in Jhajjar and we had gone to a wedding in Bhopal. We returned to Delhi today and we want to go home,” he said.
“On a normal day, we would have just taken a bus from the Tikri border to Jhajjar. But now the roads are blocked and we are walking back. kuccha roads (side lanes) now and I hope to get at least one rickshaw somewhere. “
Those coming from Haryana to Delhi also switch to other routes. At a border point called Jharoda Kalan, all private and commercial vehicles from Haryana, including places like Rohtak and Bahadurgarh, heading towards Delhi are being scrutinized. The police are taking note of the details of the drivers and passengers. This has caused traffic jams for hours.
“I have been stuck in traffic for 3 hours. It is very difficult to travel like this,” one man told NDTV.
