CHANDIGARH: Two Punjab farmers returning to Patiala from a protest site near the Delhi borders were killed in an accident early Tuesday morning after a truck struck their tractor car in the Karnal district of Haryana, said the police.
Another farmer was injured in the incident that took place at the Taraori overpass, they said, adding that a few more in the cart escaped with minor injuries.
Taraori Police Station SHO Inspector Sachin said the deceased were around 24 and 50 years old.
He said that according to a statement given to police by one of the farmers who was riding in the tractor car, the truck driver appeared to have fallen asleep behind the wheels, causing the accident.
The truck driver managed to flee the scene, he said, adding that a case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the law in connection with the incident.
“The farmers were coming back from Delhi. They belonged to Saphera under the Sadar police station in Patiala,” he said.
Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and elsewhere have been protesting near various border points in Delhi, including Singhu and Tikri, for more than fifteen days demanding that the Center repeal three new agricultural laws.
