Guwahati:
Amid an increase in COVID-19 cases in Assam, the state Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said today that deaths after treatment for coronavirus infection are also on the rise. He said that although there is no clear data, the government estimates that many of those who have been treated for COVID-19 and who showed negative results developed complications such as fibrosis, adding that they had to return to hospitals.
It is estimated that the majority in a thousand people died due to complications after COVID-19, but they have not been included in the coronavirus death data as the complications developed after they turned negative, the health minister told the journalists in Guwahati today.
“This is a major concern. Post-coronavirus complications are increasing. Most patients are well managed in isolation within the first 10 days, but many are also developing respiratory problems after becoming COVID-19 negative,” Sarma said .
“Yesterday, I was handling a similar case from my constituency. The patient has become serious after COVID-19. In the case of patients like this, the data cannot be included in the coronavirus deaths because they are negative. They told me that hospitals have more people with post-COVID-19 problems and many are also dying, “said Sarma.
Assam has so far reported more than 1.19 lakh of positive cases and more than 300 deaths.
“There is a lot of confusion about the COVID-19 death data. For example, if a person infected with coronavirus was treated and then turned negative but died after developing complications, that person will not be added to the death list. technicalities, “Sarma said.
“The 1,000 figure is my estimate. I don’t have clear statistics, but about 1,000 people have died in total during the COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 period. The data we provide is just the patients who have died while they were still positive. But post-COVID-19 deaths are definitely on the rise … His lungs develop fibrosis, “Sarma said.
He said the coronavirus situation in Assam is “worrisome.” Last month, on average, Assam had been reporting 2,000 cases per day, but now the average is almost 3,000, which could lead to close to 1 lakh per month.
It can add great pressure on healthcare workers and doctors, who face fatigue and stress as the fight against coronavirus stretches for more than six months and continues to escalate.
Sarma said the state will intensify the vigil and take action against people who do not wear a mask in public and do not follow safety guidelines.
The Gauhati High Court told Assam police on Thursday to strictly enforce the wearing of masks and other COVID-19 guidelines. One petition said those who violated security rules were not being effectively detained across the state.
