Mumbai:
Rhea Chakraborty’s arrest is a “travesty of justice,” her attorney Satish Maneshinde said today after the Office of Narcotics Control moved the 28-year-old. The central agency had interrogated her three times, once even confronting her arrested brother Showik Chakraborty, which, according to sources, left her in tears.
Sources from the Office of Narcotics Control said that she admitted to purchasing drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput, whose death on June 14 sparked a scandal, ultimately leading to investigations by multiple central agencies.
Manshinde expressed her outrage, saying that three central agencies were “harassing a single woman just because she was in love with a drug addict suffering from mental health problems.”
Rhea Chakraborty came under the central agencies scanner after allegations by Sushant Singh’s family that she mentally harassed him, diverted 15 million rupees from his bank account and played a role in his death. The actress has been vilified in the media and was harassed when she appeared for questioning by the Office of Narcotics Control on Sunday.
Ms. Chakraborty has repeatedly said that she and her family have been the subject of a witch hunt.
Sushant Singh Rajput, Manshinde said, was “for several years under the care of five prominent psychiatrists in Mumbai and ended up committing suicide due to the use of illegally administered drugs.”
The reference to “illegally administered drugs” went to revelations of a WhatsApp conversation allegedly between Sushant Singh Rajput and one of her four sisters, where she apparently suggested the names of prescription drugs for anxiety and offered to obtain a prescription for purchase.
Sushant Singh Rajput died five days after this conversation.
Rhea Chakraborty filed a complaint against the woman, Priyanka Singh, accusing her of playing a role in her suicide by writing “false medical prescriptions”. A police case has been filed against her.
Rhea Chakraborty, who had stressed that she was mentally prepared for arrest, appeared today for questioning wearing a T-shirt that read “Roses are red, violets are blue, let’s destroy the patriarchy, you and me.” As officers took her away after her arrest, she also greeted the media, indicating her intention to fight back.
