Rhea Chakraborty to remain in Mumbai jail for now, bail denied

Rhea Chakraborty was arrested Monday on charges of buying drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput.

New Delhi:

Actor Rhea Chakraborty, arrested on drug charges related to the Sushant Singh Rajput case, was denied bail today by a Mumbai court. The bail requests of her brother Showik Chakraborty and eight other defendants were also rejected.

Rhea Chakraborty will remain in Byculla Jail, where she was taken after a magistrate rejected her first request for bail and sent her to jail until September 22.

In her second request for bail, she had retracted her confession and said she was “forced to make incriminating confessions.” She said that “she had not committed any crime and had been falsely implicated in the case.” She had also denounced violations and death threats and “serious damage to her mental health and well-being” due to multiple investigations.

But the Office of Narcotics Control argued that, if released on bail, the actress “can manipulate the evidence and also try to win witnesses using her position in society and the power of money.”

Rhea Chakraborty had conscious knowledge of her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput’s drug use, the agency said, and “had become part of this crime by acquiring drugs” for him.

The drug bureau said that Rhea Chakraborty used her credit card and payment gateways to facilitate financial transactions related to illicit drug trafficking. She also insisted that her confession was “voluntary”, not coerced and admissible in court.

The drug agency said that the drugs funded (by Rhea Chakraborty) were not intended for personal use but to be supplied to someone else. “Therefore, Section 27A of the NDPS (Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act) is applicable and she cannot escape the clutches of the law,” she argued.

The 28-year-old actor was arrested Monday on charges of buying drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput, a rising movie star whose death on June 14 is under investigation by various agencies, including the CBI.
