Rhea Chakraborty says she was forced to make self-incriminating confessions

Rhea Chakraborty was arrested Monday on drug purchase charges.

Mumbai / New Delhi:

Actress Rhea Chakraborty, arrested on drug-related charges in the Sushant Singh Rajput case, has said in her bail request that she was forced to make self-incriminating confessions, which she now recants. She has also said that her life is in danger in judicial custody, that she has received rape and death threats and that three investigations “have seriously affected her mental health and well-being.”

Rhea Chakraborty’s bail petition says that she “has not committed any crime and has been falsely implicated in the case.”

“During her custody, the plaintiff was forced to make self-incriminating confessions. Through her September 8 request, the plaintiff has formally retracted all of these incriminating confessions,” says the 28-year-old actor.

The petition argues that his arrest was “unjustified and without any justification”, that his freedom was “arbitrarily restricted” and that no female officers were present during the interrogation. Rhea Chakraborty says she “did not have access to any legal advice during her interrogation when she was questioned for a minimum of eight hours in a row by several male officers.”

He also said that the crime involved only a small amount of drugs and therefore required only one year in jail and was a bail charge.

Rhea Chakraborty was transferred yesterday to Byculla Prison, the only prison for women in Mumbai. Her previous request for bail was rejected by a magistrate who sent her to jail until September 22.

The 28-year-old actress was arrested on Monday on charges of buying drugs for her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput, a young movie star whose death on June 14 is under investigation by various agencies, including the CBI. She faces charges that could lead to up to 10 years in jail.

A drug-related twist emerged in the case when the Directorate of Enforcement, in its investigations into alleged financial crimes, found WhatsApp chats on Rhea Chakraborty’s phone that revolved around the purchase or organization of drugs for Sushant Singh Rajput.

Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik Chakraborty are accused of arranging drugs with the help of Sushant Singh Rajput employees Samuel Miranda and Dipesh Sawant, who were allegedly in contact with drug traffickers.

Rhea was “an active member of the drug syndicate related to the supply of drugs” and knew “all the deliveries and payments,” the Office of Narcotics Control said in its court papers.

“It is also clear from the statement that Rhea Chakraborty used to purchase drugs for Sushant Singh Rajputs for consumption purposes,” the anti-drug agency said.

Several prominent members of the film fraternity have voiced their support for Rhea Chakraborty on social media in counterbalance to a large section that has targeted her over the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, including her family.
