The Mumbai High Court on Wednesday granted bail to actress Rhea Chakraborty, arrested on drug-related charges and ordered to post a personal bond of 1 lakh rupees. A bench under Judge Sarang Kotwal also granted bail to Rajput aides Dipesh Sawant and Samuel Miranda, but rejected the release on bail of Rhea Chakraborty’s brother Showik Chakraborty, who is also a defendant in the case. The court also rejected the release on bail of alleged drug trafficker Abdel Basit Parihar.
At around 5.30pm on Wednesday, Rhea Chakraborty was released from the Byculla jail. Her lawyer Satish Maneshinde was present to meet her in the car. Rhea’s car windows were covered with newspapers and no image was captured of her. While Rhea is out of Byculla jail in the drug case, the main focus is on the CBI FIR brought against her by the family in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The verdict on the CBI investigation is still pending.
Rhea Chakraborty, her brother and the other defendants were arrested last month by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with their investigation into the drug angle related to the Rajput death case. The HC, while granting bail to Rhea Chakraborty and two other people, ordered them to deposit their passports with the NCB and not to leave the country without permission from the special NDPS court. The HC asked Rhea to post a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and said that she should visit the nearest police station at 11am for the first 10 days after being released from judicial custody.
Shekhar Suman Disappointed With Rhea Chakraborty’s Bail; deeply skeptical about CBI
He ordered him not to leave Mumbai without permission from the NCB and not to tamper with the evidence while he was out on bail. The HC also directed Rhea to visit the OCN office at 11 am on the first day of each month for the next six months. All those who have been granted bail, including Rhea, will also need to request permission from the NCB investigating officer to leave Mumbai, the court said.
Rhea Chakraborty’s attorney, Satish Maneshinde, said they were delighted with the higher court order. “Truth and justice have prevailed and ultimately the factual and law submissions have been accepted by Judge Sarang V Kotwal,” he said. Rea’s arrest and custody was “totally unjustified and outside the scope of the law,” Maneshinde said.
