Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government raised the retirement age for all its employees from 58 to 59 on Thursday. A press release issued by state prime minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said the order is effective immediately, but gave no further details. The twist given to history was that this is a movement intended to continue the state’s effort to stop the spread of the new coronavirus causing Covid-19. The highest retirement age is now applicable to all Tamil Nadu government employees, including government teachers and assisted schools and colleges, in addition to all state companies and local agencies. In March and April, a similar two-month extension was granted to doctors, nurses, and other paramedical personnel who are retiring so as not to disrupt the Covid-19 effort.
