The Jammu and Kashmir government restored 2G internet connectivity across the entire Union territory on Tuesday, six days after the service was interrupted during an operation by security forces that resulted in the assassination of militant commander Riyaz Naikoo.
Last week, internet connectivity and prepaid mobile phone services in Kashmir were disrupted during a shooting in which Naikoo, Hizbul operations commander Mujahideen and his aide were killed in the Beighpora Gulzarpora village in the southern Pulwama district. of Kashmir.
Prepaid mobile phone services were restored on Friday, but mobile Internet connectivity remained suspended until May 11, or the 17th of the holy month of Ramzan, due to apprehension about possible militant attacks.
Senior (Home) Secretary Shaleen Kabra issued an order to restore mobile internet services in Kashmir.
On Monday, the Supreme Court had refused to order the restoration of 4G services on mobile devices in Jammu and Kashmir, but issued instructions to form a special committee to address the issues raised by petitioners who had challenged the interruption of connectivity to Internet in the region.
All internet services were interrupted in the former state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 4 of last year, hours before the Center announced its decision to fork the state in the union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Since then, whenever there is a major militant attack or shooting anywhere in Kashmir, the government cuts off mobile internet services as officials fear these developments may spark new protests. For many people, frequent interruption of Internet connectivity has become a headache.
“Now it is a big problem. First, we were banned from using high-speed Internet and now even 2G is being used frequently,” said a local resident who declined to be identified.
Authorities anticipated attacks on the security forces in Kashmir on Ramzan day 17, or Badr day, when a few hundred Muslims led by the prophet Muhammad confronted their powerful opponents in Arabia and won. There was speculation about an attack as militants have attacked security forces in the Kashmir valley on this day in the past. Last year, there were similar reports of possible attacks on Ramzan Day 17.
However, authorities decided last week to restore 2G internet connectivity after Ramzan 17 passed away peacefully. As there were no incidents on the day, officials restored low-speed mobile internet services on Tuesday morning.
