MUMBAI: The criminal branch of the Mumbai police investigating the TRP manipulation scam arrested Ghanshyam Dilipkumar Singh (44), head of distribution of Republic TV, on Tuesday, accused of paying a monthly sum to artificially increase the audience figures of channel, reports Ahmed Ali.
Singh, a resident of Ghodbunder Road in Thane, is the twelfth defendant to be arrested in the case. Singh, the vice president of the channel, was previously questioned by the police on multiple occasions. A metropolitan magistrate left him in police custody until November 13. Singh is accused of paying monthly sums to Abhishek Kolawade of the marketing company. Police said they wanted to question him to find out more about the payments made.
The police further said that Kolawade also received Rs 15 lakh per month from Singh to increase the TRP of Republic TV channel and even received money from hawala operators said the return application. Police are looking for hawala operators who could be witnesses in the case, the pretrial detention request said. Police said Singh paid money to another arrested defendant, Ashish Choudhary as well. The police had recovered 11.72 lakh rupees from Kolawade’s house and 2 lakh rupees from Choudhary’s office in Thane during a recent raid. To measure TRP, the Broadcasting Hearings Research Council (BARC) has installed barometers in the homes of select audiences. BARC had awarded the barometer monitoring contract to Hansa Research.
