British Prime Minister Boris Johnson greeted India on Republic Day on Tuesday. In his video message to celebrate the birth of an ‘extraordinary Constitution’ that established India as the world’s largest sovereign democracy, the UK prime minister reiterated his plan to visit India in the coming months. “I really wanted to join you on this important occasion at the kind invitation of my friend Prime Minister Modi, sadly our common fight against COVID has kept me in London,” Johnson said. He was scheduled to be in New Delhi as the main guest at the annual parade to mark the 72nd Indian Republic Day, but had to suspend the visit to focus on the internal crisis triggered by the emergence of a new, deadlier variant of the coronavirus in the UK at the end of last year.
