India reported a record daily increase of 97,894 coronavirus infections in 24 hours, surpassing the 51 lakh mark, data from the Health Ministry showed this morning. With 51,18,253 infections, India is the second most affected country in the world and only behind the United States, which has a case burden of around 66 lakh. For the first time, the number of active cases in the country has crossed the 10 lakh mark, the data showed. In the 24-hour period, India reported 1,132 virus-related deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 83,198.

Maharashtra remains the state hardest hit by the pandemic with a case count of more than 10.7 lakh. More than 37 percent of the accumulated deaths reported so far in the country come from the western state.

Phase I clinical trials of the two candidate vaccines developed indigenously by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR and Cadila Healthcare Ltd have revealed “excellent safety”, Rajya Sabha reported Wednesday.
