In a comment likely to be controversial, BJP MLA Surendra Singh said on Saturday that rape cases in the country can only be prevented with “sanskaar” (culture and values) and not with “shasan” (governance) or “talwar” ( sword). His comments came at a time when the alleged death of a woman in the Uttar Pradesh village of Hathras has sparked protests across the country, prompting Yogi Adityanath’s government to hand the case over to the IWC.
In a video published by the news agency AND ME, the legislator, representing the Bairia constituency in Ballia of Uttar Pradesh, is heard emphasizing the need for parents to instill good values in their daughters to prevent such crimes.

And he added: “It is the government and the values that together will make the country beautiful and avoid such cases.”
The state government is receiving huge criticism for handling the case with opposition party leaders demanding the prime minister’s resignation. On Saturday, the government recommended a CBI investigation throughout the chain of events in the Hathras assault and the alleged gangrape case, including his hasty cremation without the family present.
In addition to this, the government also suspended three policemen, including Hathras Police Superintendent Vikrant Vir, so far.
