Random Covid Tests at Delhi Airport, Train Station, No Holi in Public

Delhi is not officially among the 7+ states that are experiencing a large increase in cases.

New Delhi:

Random tests for the coronavirus will be carried out at Delhi’s airports, train and bus stations, the Delhi government declared today amid a surge in infections that is considered the second emerging wave of the virus. A bar was also placed in the public celebration of the upcoming Holi, Shab-e-Barat and Navratra festivals. The government said that security measures for Covid must be rigorously observed in public places, especially in markets and shopping malls.

The Delhi government said random tests will also be conducted at crowded boarding points for private buses. District magistrates and senior police officers in all districts were ordered to strictly follow the instructions.

The government directive said “random testing of travelers from states where corona infection is spreading very fast” should be carried out.

The daily increase of Covid in Delhi has exceeded 1,000: during the last 24 hours, 1,101 new cases were reported. The last time daily cases were this high was on December 19, when the city registered 1,139 new cases.

Four people have died in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 10,967.

The number of active cases has exceeded 4,000, the exact figure is 4,411. This is the highest number of total active cases since January 6, when 4,481 active cases were reported.

Public health experts suspect that the resurgence of the virus, considered the second emerging wave of Covid in the country, was partially caused by mutant forms and also by lax observance of safety measures, including the use of masks and the social distancing.

As of today, the total number of infections with variants from the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa in the country is 795, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health.

Earlier today, Mumbai civic authorities banned the celebration of Holi both in public and private, as the 24-hour increase exceeded 3,500. The Center said today that vaccinations for all people over the age of 45 will begin on April 1.
