The BJP said on Thursday that the support of some foreign celebrities for farmers protesting against the three new agricultural laws was an attempt to “destabilize the country” and said that Indian democracy “does not need a foreign certificate.” This comes after teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, pop singer Rihanna and several people from the international community spoke out in support of farmers.
Opposition parties on Thursday criticized the government for its handling of ongoing farmer protests. They accused the government of digging trenches and placing spikes, where bridges should have been built to win over farmers, PTI reported. TMC leader Derek O’Brien lobbied the government to repeal all three laws and offered a ‘Repeal Bill 2021’ drafted by him for that purpose.
A delegation of opposition leaders was prevented from reaching the Ghazipur border on Thursday morning to meet with farmers who have been protesting the Center’s controversial new farm laws. The delegation included MP NCP Supriya Sule, MP DMK Kanimozhi, MP SAD Harsimrat Kaur Badal, and MP TMC Saugata Roy.
