Rajya Sabha holds crucial meeting as opposition boycotts Parliament proceedings

Rajya Sabha has called his Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting on Tuesday after a day full of hectic activities, protests and the passage of various bills.

But the Opposition, which announced to boycott the Upper House for the remainder of the session, will not attend the meeting.

Derek O’Brien from TMC, Ram Gopal Yadav from SP, Anand Sharma and Jairam Ramesh from Congress and Manoj Kumar Jha from RJD are the five opposition leaders who will skip the 11-member committee meeting.

The BAC is a panel chaired by Rajya Saha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu to discuss the House’s weekly agenda.

The meeting has been called amid indications that the House could be lifted in a day or two.

The Opposition parties also claimed that they were informed just an hour ago about the BAC meeting, which left them little time to attend the meeting.

Rajya Sabha officials noted that the meeting was decided on short notice and every effort was made to inform the panel members as quickly as possible.

On Sunday, Rajya Sabha passed the two key agricultural bills: the 2020 Trade and Trade in Agricultural Products (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, and the Farmers’ Agricultural Prices and Services Guarantee Agreement (Empowerment and Protection ) of 2020, amid fierce protests at home.

While the Opposition claimed that the bills were against farmers, the government says that these bills will help boost the agricultural sector through private investment. On Monday, eight opposition deputies were suspended for rebellious behavior.

On Monday, the opposition demonstrated its disapproval in the Upper House of Parliament against the suspension of MPs and the passage of these bills and boycotted Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the session.
