NEW DELHI: Retired IAS Officer Rajiv kumar on Tuesday he took office as the new Election Commissioner of India. Kumar’s appointment came immediately after Ashok Lavasa resigned at the end of his term. Kumar was appointed new Election commissioner by President Ram Nath Kovind on August 21.
Here is everything you need to know about the new Election Commissioner of India:
* Rajiv Kumar is a retired Indian Administrative Services (IAS) official from Jharkhand cadre from 1984.
* Kumar will work in coordination with Chief Elections Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora and Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra.
* Kumar had served as president of the Public Company Selection Board (PESB). His term would end on April 28, 2023. Prior to this, he had served as the Union’s finance secretary between September 2017 and February 2020.
* During his terms in the finance and personnel ministries, Kumar was known for introducing reforms in banking and the bureaucracy.
* In September 2017, Kumar was appointed Secretary of the Department of Financial Services. He is also credited with playing a key role in the recent merger of 10 public sector banks into four.
