Chennai:
Actor Rajinikanth said today that it was a mistake to have approached the Madras High Court rather than the Chennai Corporation to resolve a property tax dispute involving a wedding hall that he owns. He also said that this experience had been a lesson.
The film’s veteran’s comment came a day after he withdrew his petition from the Madras High Court asking him to stop civic authorities from imposing a fine on top of the Rs 6.5 lakh property tax levied on his wedding hall. . The court told the actor that he should have sent a reminder to the local body before going to court. He also warned about the imposition of costs for coming quickly for help.
In a tweet written in Tamil and posted today, Rajinikanth said: “Raghavendra Mandapam property tax … we should have appealed to the corporation. The mistake could have been avoided. #Experience is a lesson.”
In his court statement, the actor had claimed that he had applied for the property tax waiver of Chennai Corporation, citing the lack of business due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. It had also demanded the reimbursement of all advance payments made since the national shutdown imposed in March in the wake of the spread of the disease. The film’s artist said he had approached court only after the local civic body did not respond to his appeal.
Rajinikanth’s request came amid an aggressive campaign by the Chennai Corporation to collect property taxes from homeowners, many of whom have said they have no money to pay.
Meanwhile, the superstar today paid the full amount of Rs 6.56 lakh collected as property tax.
