Chennai:
Superstar Rajinikanth today hinted at a rethinking of joining electoral politics and said he would announce his stance at an “appropriate time” amid speculation sparked by a letter that many believed was written by him and leaked. “The letter is not mine, but the information about my health and the advice of the doctors is true,” Rajinikanth said in a statement.
“I will speak to Rajini Makkal Mandram and announce my political position at the appropriate time,” said the 69-year-old actor, who has spoken on various political issues in the past two years but has delayed his formal downfall, unlike his comrade from the film industry Kamal Haasan, whose party candidates contested last year’s Lok Sabha elections.
Sources close to Rajinikanth say that he will meet virtually with his party leaders in the next few days and that he could announce his decision on electoral policy in the last week of December or early January.
Rajinikanth’s statement comes just seven months before the Tamil Nadu elections, which was believed to be his first poll. His entry into the electoral battle was projected as the “x factor” in Tamil Nadu, a state where movie stars have largely successfully transited into politics.
Talk about Rajinikanth reconsidering a future in politics began after a letter began circulating online Wednesday. The letter appeared to cite the coronavirus pandemic as the reason the actor abandoned his political plans.
The letter appeared to indicate that doctors had advised the actor to restrict his movements as he has a kidney condition and could be even more vulnerable to COVID-19. Doctors informed the veteran actor that a vaccine is the only solution and they weren’t sure if his body would accept it.
“No one knows when it will arrive, even if you are not sure whether your body will accept it. Now you are 70 years old, you have already undergone a kidney transplant, compared to others, your immune system is weak. You can get infected easily. It is not convenient. campaigning, or meeting people, ”the doctors are believed to have told the actor.
The letter quoted Rajinikanth as saying: “A traditional campaign would harm my health … I don’t care much about myself, not as much as about those around me,” the letter was believed to read.
In March, Rajinikanth had stated that he would not run for election just to become Chief Minister, that he really wanted to see positive change. “I had the opportunity in 1996 and I did not take it at 45 years old. If I do it now, they would call me a fool,” Rajinikanth had said, giving a preview of his political party at a press meeting in Chennai.
He had also clarified that he had publicly announced his intention to enter politics only on December 31, 2017, despite the fact that people kept referring to his comments in 1996, which are often seen as the reason why J Jayalalithaa and their AIADMK lost that year. “If Jayalalithaa is rejected, not even God can save Tamil Nadu,” he said.
