The Rajasthan temple priest Babu Lal Vaishnav, who died after being set on fire on Thursday in the Karauli district, He was cremated on Saturday by the family after the state government assured that it would comply with all their demands, PTI reported.
The state government has secured 10 lakh rupees compensation, a contract job for a dependent and a house under Indira Awas Yojna, as demanded by the family, who had refused to perform her last rites.
“The funeral took place after family members agreed on the guarantee of compensation, work, house and transfer of patwari and SHO,” PTI quoted Karauli SP Mridul Kachawa as saying.
The cremation was preceded by a protest from relatives and close residents in Bukna village, demanding justice for the victim. It became a political drama after the BJP leaders joined the protest and stepped up their attack on the Ashok Gehlot government over the incident.
BJP deputy Kirodi Lal Meena, who sat in a dharna demanding justice for the family, said: “People in positions of responsibility must be with the victim’s family members so that such incidents are not repeated. I have sat in dharna with members of his family and local public representatives to demand justice. The Ashok Gehlot government should wake up from slumber and do justice.
According to the police, the main defendant, Kailash Meena, who wanted to invade Vaishnav lands, was arrested on Friday and the team is on the lookout for four more defendants. Chief Minister Gehlot has said that the state government has taken notice and that the culprits will not be spared.
