New Delhi: Indian Railways said Sunday it plans to gradually restart passenger train operations beginning May 12, 2020, initially with 15 pairs of trains (30 return trips).
These trains will run as special trains from the New Delhi station connecting 15 major cities in the country, namely Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Trivandrum, Madgaon, Central Mumbai , Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi.
“Thereafter, Indian Railways will begin more special services on new routes, based on available coaches after reserving 20,000 coaches for COVID-19 service centers and an adequate number of reserved coaches to allow the operation of up to 300 trains all days like ‘Special Shramik “for stranded migrants,” the statement said.
The reservation to book on these trains will start at 4 pm on May 11 and will be available only on the IRCTC website. All passenger trains will run only with AC coaches and with limited stops. The fee will be equivalent to the ticket fee charged by the Rajdhani Train.
Ticket reservation counters at stations will be closed and no counter tickets will be issued, including platform tickets. Only passengers with confirmed valid tickets will be able to enter the railway stations.
It will be mandatory to use a face cover, undergo a check-out and only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed on the trains.
Additional details, including the train schedule, will be released separately in due course, the Railways statement said.
“Indian Railways has decided to gradually resume passenger train services, but existing Shramik special trains will continue to operate under the current system at the request of the state governments concerned,” the Ministry of Railways clarified.
