In a joint statement, Zona Ferroviaria Occidental and Central, which operate the suburban system in MMR, said permit has been granted with immediate effect.
At the request of the Government of Maharashtra, vide letter No. DMU 2020 / CR 92 / DM 1, the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India has granted permission to school teachers and other non-teaching staff of schools to travel by suburban services Mumbai Suburban Network with immediate effect.
Valid identity cards are the authority to enter the stations, according to the statement, adding that adherence to social distancing and other regulations in place for the COVID-19 outbreak was a must.
Rail authorities have resumed 88 percent of the total 3,141 suburban services that were in operation before the COVID-19 outbreak.
During normal times before the shutdown, the Central Rail (CR) used to operate 1,772 services, while the Western Rail (WR) operated 1,367 services on the suburban network, they said.
Local trains, regarded as the livelihood of Mumbai, were resumed for essential and emergency services personnel in June this year.
The state government had asked railroads last week to allow this section to address suburban services, which resumed on June 15 on the condition that only those designated as essential services personnel can travel.
The letter was received from the Maharashtra government regarding the resumption of local train services for the general public, while ensuring compliance with all Covid-19 protocols.
