New Delhi:

The leader of Congress, Rahul Gandhi, has launched a three-day protest in Punjab against the controversial new agricultural laws.

Kerala’s Wayanad Congress MP will hold a series of public meetings with farmers in the state as part of the “Kheti Bachao Yatra“(Protect the agricultural sector), which aims to highlight the position of Congress against these laws that were passed by parliament last month amid fierce protests from the opposition.

He will also hold a tractor rally as part of the three-day Yatra’s first day program together with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and the head of the Punjab Congress Sunil Jakhar and other party leaders.

Gandhi is scheduled to hold a public meeting and launch a signature campaign at Badhni Kalan in Moga district, some 170 km from Chandigarh. He will then lead a “tractor rally” from Badhni Kalan to Jatpura. Rahul Gandhi will conclude the yatra in Jatpura, Ludhiana, where he will hold a public meeting at 4 PM. The tractor rallies will cover more than 50 km, spread over three days in various districts and districts.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Punjab comes days after Amarinder Singh staged a sit-in against agricultural laws.

Punjab and several other states have witnessed fierce protests by farmers in the last week over all three laws: the Agricultural Agricultural Products Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill of 2020, the Price Guarantee Agreement and the Farmers Agricultural Services (Empowerment and Protection) Bill, 2020 and the Essential Commodities Bill (Amendment), which were approved by the President on Sunday.

While critics say that farmers will lose bargaining power with the entry of private actors into the agricultural sector and will not get a minimum price support for their products, the government has said the new laws will help small and marginal farmers.
