New Delhi:
Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi, who visited Hathras in Uttar Pradesh last week amid outrage over the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old woman, attacked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath this morning in a tweet. The brutal torture of the 20-year-old Dalit woman has sparked outrage across the country; he died in a Delhi hospital last month.
“The shameful truth is that many Indians do not consider Dalits, Muslims and Tribals human. The CM and its police say that no one was raped because for them, and for many other Indians, she was NOBODY (sic),” said the ex-The head of Congress wrote in a tweet this morning, along with a news report that said police had been denying the rape charges.
The 20-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by four men from her village on September 14. She died two weeks after sustaining horrific injuries in a savage assault that many have compared to the 2012 gang rape in the national capital.
The UP government has been criticized for handling the case and a night cremation where his family was allegedly not allowed. Police, meanwhile, have filed 19 FIRs (First Information Reports), not against the defendants, but against “unknown persons” for a conspiracy to defame the state government.
Last week, Mr. Gandhi had visited the victim’s family, two days after the UP police detained him as he marched towards Hathras. Dramatic images showed him in a fight with UP police officers; he was pushed and fell to the ground.
Meanwhile, the central government reminded state and UT governments on Saturday of the existing laws for “mandatory police action in cases of crimes against women.”
