The congressional leadership issue pointed out by the dissidents has not yet been resolved, the party’s strategy group decided today to highlight the issues raised by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the next session of parliament. The virtual meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi also decided to reject outright four of the 11 ordinances that would be taken at the parliament meeting on September 14 and to demand a longer Zero Hour, sources said. A portion of the dissidents who confronted Sonia and Rahul Gandhi for the first time since the Working Committee meeting on August 24 said they were happy with today’s decisions.
Over the past five months, Ms. Gandhi has written seven letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rahul Gandhi had tweeted every day, lashing out at the government on various issues, including its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the economic recession, and Chinese aggression at the Royal Line of Control in Ladakh.
Gandhi, who was present at the meeting, launched a strong attack on the government and Prime Minister Modi over the Chinese provocations and the economy, claiming that the government’s mode of denial is placing the nation in a situation similar to that of the Titanic.
“Although the media and Narendra Modi are trying to divert it, they cannot hide the problem beyond a point,” Gandhi said, comparing the government to people who “wear earplugs.”
“Modi can’t keep listening to what he wants. Unemployment, incursions and the economy that is in crisis will suddenly come to the fore … like the Titanic ship that hit the iceberg and broke into pieces,” he said in a combative state of mind.
“How can they say that there is no incursion and that nothing has happened when our army is at a standstill? We have to raise these issues,” said the 49-year-old, who had resigned as party chief. last year, pushing the party into a deeper crisis.
Since then, Gandhi has refused to take office again, insisting that he would continue the battle against the BJP in his usual way, prompting whispered concerns by a section that he wanted power without responsibility.
Letter writers who attended the meeting, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and special guest Manish Tiwari, said they were happy with the meeting and that the discussions were “sensible” and “mature.”
At the meeting it was decided that there will be a contest for the position of vice president and the candidate will be from the allies of Congress, probably the DMK.
The party also decided that the opposition will contest the elections in the Rajya Sabha despite the shortage of numbers and the possibility that many will be absent.
There has to be coordination between both houses by the parliamentary groups, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha teams must work together and ensure unity and presence, said Sonia Gandhi.
