Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra urge people to join the ‘Speak Up for Farmers’ campaign

Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday urged people to join the “Speak Up for Farmers” campaign, amid protests by farmers against the central government’s new agricultural laws.

“The Modi government tortured farmers, first they introduced laws for blacks and then they used force / farmers accused of lathi. But they forgot that when farmers raise their voices, it resonates across the country. Join us through the #SpeakUpForFarmers campaign against the exploitation of our fellow farmers, ”reads Rahul’s tweet (roughly translated from Hindi).

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra raised the issue and argued that the new agricultural laws ignored the interests of farmers.

“The name of the law is Farmers Law, but all the benefit to the billionaire friends. How can you make farm laws without talking to farmers? How can the interests of farmers be ignored when making these laws? The government will have to listen to the farmers. Let’s raise our voices together in support of farmers. #SpeakUpForFarmers, ”he tweeted in Hindi.

Farmers have been protesting in various places in Delhi and Haryana and have rejected the central government’s offer to hold talks on December 3, saying that imposing conditions to start a dialogue is an insult to them.

Around 32 farmer organizations, mostly from Punjab, and some farmers from Gujarat and Maharashtra also managed to reach Delhi on Friday and gathered in border areas to continue their protest.

Farmers protest against the Agricultural Products Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Act of 2020, the Farmers’ Agreement (Empowerment and Protection) on Price Guarantee and the Agricultural Services Act of 2020 and the Essential Products Act (Amendment ) of 2020.

The Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has said that the central government is ready for talks with farmers’ unions on December 3.
