Quadruple increase in daily coronavirus cases across India

The number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases reported in one day has seen an increase of almost four times in the past month, with 990 cases reporting positive on April 15 compared to 3,525 cases reported on May 13, according to data. Collated by the Association of Indian Health Providers (AHPI), and released on Wednesday. The Hindustan Times control panel itself showed 12,330 new cases on April 15 and 78,015 on May 13.

However, the case positivity rate has ranged from 3-4%, with an upper limit so far of 6.21%, and the case recovery rate has also seen a steady increase in India and is currently at 32.8%, the agency said.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said Wednesday while reviewing Covid’s readiness in one of the states that, while the doubling time if infections dropped to 11 days in the past two weeks, it has improved to 12.6 days in the last three days, an indication that the spread may be decreasing.

As on Tuesday, there are 2.75% of active Covid-19 patients in intensive care units (ICUs), 0.37% with ventilators and 1.89% with oxygen, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health.

There are nine states and Union territories that have not reported any cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours: Andaman Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Chhattisgarh, Ladakh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram. Daman and Diu, Sikkim, Nagaland and Lakshadweep have reported no cases to date.

Sample analysis capacity has also been strengthened, and on Tuesday India tested 94,708 Covid-19 samples in a single day at 352 of its government laboratories and 140 approved private laboratories, according to the Ministry of Health.

India is currently able to analyze samples of one lakh per day, and a total of 18.56,477 tests have been performed so far since the country began testing samples for Covid-19 on January 24 at the apex virology laboratory in Indian Council of Medical Research at National Institute of Virology in Pune. That translates to around 1,430 tests per million inhabitants.

“India has performed well in managing the disease so far, and in the future too, if necessary, we have the necessary infrastructure to deal with patients’ fever,” said Harsh Vardhan.

As on Wednesday, India has around 900 dedicated Covid operating hospitals with 1.79,882 beds (isolation beds- 1.60,610 and ICU beds- 19,272), and 2,040 dedicated Covid health centers with 1.29,689 beds (beds isolation-1,19,340 and ICU Beds: 10,349), along with 8,708 quarantine centers and 5,577 Covid care centers with 4.93,101 beds, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

The Center has also provided 7.8 million N95 masks and 4.2 million personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to Union States and territories, and central government hospitals.

“From importing EPP kits to manufacturing around 3 lakh EPP kits in the country in one day, India has come a long way in just over a month. We are prepared in every way, ”added Harsh Vardhan.
