CHANDIGARH – Former DIG Army and Prison Officer in Punjab, Captain Lakhminder Singh Jakhar has resigned stating that he wants to support farmers protesting against farm laws and that his resignation should be treated as premature retirement.
After serving in the military, Captain Jakhar had joined the Punjab Police Service (PPS) in 1994 and was due to retire in August 2022. He was suspended in May after a preliminary investigation into corruption charges for allegedly demanding monthly jail payments. officials. However, he had denied all the accusations against him.

Captain Jakhar had made headlines in March 2012 when, as the superintendent of Patiala Prison, he had refused to carry out the execution orders for the killer of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, Balwant Singh Rajoana. He even faced contempt of court charges for this act, but these charges were eventually dropped by the Punjab and Haryana high court.
In his letter to the Chief Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Captain Jakhar wrote: “I, Captain Lakhminder Singh Jakhar, DIG, Prisons would like to inform you of my thoughtful and introspective decision to support my fellow farmers who peacefully protest the ordinances agricultural activities of 2020 (sic) that are detrimental to the interests of farmers and their future generations. “The letter further states:” I myself am a farmer by birth and the same has been inherited by my ancestors who worked farmland with my hands to grow food and serve humanity. I have always listened to my conscience and now I sincerely feel that I must support my brotherhood. ” As Captain Jakhar resigned on Saturday (non-working day), the state government has not yet accepted his resignation.
He also mentioned in the letter that he will deposit a sum equivalent to any amount of payment and allowances that the government requires in the treasury to exempt it from the stipulated time of notice. “Therefore, it is requested that you consider me prematurely withdrawn from service today, that is, on December 12, 2020,” the statement read.
