New Delhi:
The leader of the Punjabi Ekta Party, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, has said that a referendum should be held in Punjab and Haryana to solve the stalemate in agricultural laws.
Khaira, who wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said that a referendum appears to be the “only logical and democratic peaceful solution” to the current deadlock between the agitated farmers’ unions and the government.
The MLA accused the central government of ignoring public sentiments in Punjab, Haryana on agricultural laws
“I am suggesting the use of the referendum as the central government has consistently ignored the huge public outcry and sentiments from Punjab, Haryana, among other states, about agricultural laws and has been publicly propagating that these laws are good for farmers, even when farmers vehemently oppose them, “he said.
He said the central government was holding talks with farmers and also “campaigning for retrograde farm laws.”
He said the legitimate demands of farmers should have been met in September when farmers’ unions began their protests in Punjab.
