Chandigarh, November 6
The son of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Raninder Singh, will not appear before the Directorate of Enforcement at his office in Jalandhar on Friday and has sought a postponement in the alleged case of violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
These were the second citations made to him in the last two weeks.
His lawyer and congressional spokesman, Jaiveer Shergill, said: “My client suffers from a high fever, cold and cough. He has given a sample for the Covid RT-PCR test, the report of which is expected.”
Shergill said that a team of doctors, led by the medical officer (Office of the Civil Surgeon), Mohali has advised him a 14-day quarantine. With everyone’s safety in mind, my client has requested an adjournment for health reasons.
The ED’s subpoena related to a case recorded by the agency under the Foreign Exchange Management Act regarding the alleged possession of undisclosed assets abroad.
Raninder Singh was questioned by the ED on the case in 2016 and asked to explain the alleged movement of funds to Switzerland and the creation of a trust and some subsidiaries in the British Virgin Islands.
The alleged cases of possession of property abroad were first investigated by the Income Tax Department.
Raninder Singh had previously denied wrongdoing.
Recently, the secretary general of the All India Congressional Committee (AICC), Harish Rawat, had questioned the timing of the recall of the son of the Punjab prime minister by the ED.
Rawat, who is also the Congress in charge of Punjab affairs, had claimed that the ED subpoena cannot suppress the voice of Amarinder Singh.
“ED’s subpoena cannot suppress Amarinder Singh’s voice. Captain Amarinder Singh is the voice of Punjab and the country’s farmers. Just watch the timing of ED’s subpoena. If you raise your voice, then ED, Income Tax , CBI will be after you. Isn’t this a message? ”Rawat had recently tweeted. – with PTI
