29 MLA and Punjab ministers tested positive for the deadly disease this week. Singh, 78, had urged lawmakers who had been in contact with the infected MLAs not to attend the one-day session of the assembly today.
Mr. Singh had also ordered that various precautions be taken for the smooth conduct of legislative affairs in the house. He had asked authorities to install machines at the home’s premises, in Punjab Bhawan and at the MLA shelter to run rapid tests for Covid.
Only those who tested negative within 48 hours of the assembly session were able to attend the session.
Singh had previously attacked the Aam Aadmi Party for organizing protests amid rising coronavirus cases.
Coronavirus cases in Punjab, which had been praised for keeping their count low, are now rising rapidly. The state has reported more than 47,800 cases, including 1,256 deaths.
Earlier this month, Punjab had ordered a nightly curfew every day from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. and a weekend shutdown in all 167 cities and towns in the state to halt the growth of the coronavirus in the state.
